Doing Words: Broadband bandwidth leapfrog leaves us behind again

Don't you think it's not just Telstra's fault, however? What about the people who design streaming video with content protection in mind? After all, even at 5kb/s I can download a 100mb file eventually. Sure, storing it on my computer would make it easier to steal, but who wants to steal a publicly available video?

As a comparison, I don't have the best connection, but if I feel like waiting a day or two for bittorrent to do its thing, I can download any video I want.

The Pirates of the Caribbean trailer in 1920x1080? It plays just fine. Actually is doesn't, the bandwidth is so high that my video card can't handle it, but its nothing to do with my connection.

Still, I'll agree that Telstra is a major problem, not just their low speeds but correspondinly, their low download limits. I spent a half-hour watching grainy clips on YouTube with some friends the other day. The quality is much lower than TV, it takes ages to download and it still put me over the curve on a $80/month connection.

TV over IP? Not anytime soon at that rate.

All good comments Ian, the problem's not solely Telstra's. It only becomes a problem when content producers just assume we have high bandwidth connections because, where they come from, high bandwidth connections are the norm. So the problem is partly to do with the producers. But only Telstra can solve the problem.
